Hyundais Daewoos sacrificed in the name of science - Click above to watch the videos after the break

In between repeated bouts to literally knock your socks off (well, not yours exactly, but you get the idea, right?) last night, the Mythbusters crew decided to revisit an old myth that was drawing the ire of the show's fans for quite some time. And it's sure to be an interesting topic to automotive enthusiasts.

When two cars collide, each traveling 50 miles per hour, does the resulting force equal one car hitting an immovable object at 100 miles per hour?

It seems like such simple physics, no? But don't forget Newton's third law. To quote the great Wikipedia of knowledge, "Whenever a first body exerts a force F on a second body, the second body exerts a force −F on the first body. F and −F are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction." Or, more simply, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Great, thanks for that, Einstein Newton. What does that have to do with crashing cars? Glad you asked. Find out in the videos pasted after the break. Warning: A large number of Hyundais Daewoos were harmed during these videos. Oh, and the results of the crash testing may surprise you.

It's every driver's nightmare: flashing blue and red lights in your rearview mirror. Speeding tickets can strike a blow to anyone's day. While you pull away from the officer with your ticket in hand, you wonder, "Is going 10 or 15 miles per hour over the speed limit that big a deal?" or "How is much is my insurance going to go up now?" Thanks to our friends at autoinsurance.org, we have answers to those questions and many more in the infographic after the jump.

Presumably what you get when you thin-slice and smoke a vampire from Twilight. Pigs. They give us so much. For a long time they gave us insulin. Now pigs' islet cells wrapped in alginate to avoid rejection are being tested in diabetic humans. You could get chocolate-covered bacon and the ability to eat it from the same animal. $18.99

This poor instructor, Matthew Weathers, has no end of trouble with his shadow as he attempts to explain the merits of the book Flatland (which is totally worth a read). Well played!

Getting sick of the iPad? Then let our old friend Tom Dickinson do what he does best. If you've somehow missed all of his Blendtec videos in the past, be warned that they aren't for the faint-hearted gadget fanatics -- especially this latest edition where Tom forcefully folds the pad to fit it into his gadget muncher. When you're ready, march on for some "pad smoke" after the break.

Update: Commenter ernie pointed out that the aluminum back was missing when Tom folded the iPad. Come on, Blendtec, just blend the metal already!

Slightly off-topic, here, but I see lots of these optical illusion posts on the web, and although some of them are pretty impressive, this one borders on voodoo. I had to run my mouse pointer over the blue traces a few times to persuade myself. I've overlaid some big yellow circles on the original image, which you can see, below, after the jump, to save you the trouble. [via Neatorama]

Radio Controlled EC280MG excavator is a big, bad Tonka come to life
We don't cover all that many radio controlled objects on this program because, well, there are just so many of them. But, every now and again we catch sight of a truly special one, something like this excavator from Modellismo Maximo that's been around for awhile but we thought you'd want to check it out regardless. It's an RC version of the Despe EC280MG, scaled down to 1:14.5 scale and weighing in at an impressive 31.5kg (about 70lbs). It has six axes of movement and is just perfect for loading up the back of your toy trucks -- and then hauling them away, as you can see in a series of videos after the break (each with worse music than the previous). How much to get in on this kind of fun? A mere €4,160 -- $5,630. Nobody said diggin' like this would be cheap.

Just because you don't have/want/like the iPad doesn't mean you can't have some fun with one anyway. Set any of these images as the background on a your friend's iPad, and watch the chaos ensue when they turn it on. More »
